Paros, OPA!
2003-07-02   10:14 p.m.

Just arrived in Paros today, and already I can't wait to get some of the pictures Steve is taking up and out somewhere. I know he loves teaching, but my dear husband is a natural photographer and I think someday, that will come in very handy - just a feeling I have.

Paros is busy and quiet at the same time; it's a central port for most of the islands in the cyclades, and so it's downtown area is swarming with people and overflowing with an abundance of varying languages - french, german, italian, english, greek. It's funny, you can't go a step with out hearing them tangle together.

We rented the blang blang bmw of scooters today - it's big and bad ass and roars a lot while we drive. ciao, beep beep. kiss kiss. and all that.

We met Michael and Karin at the port, and then drove about 5 km to our apartment, which has a view of the vast openness that preceeds the shoreline. One or two houses are springing up; Karin seemed to indicate that people are buying up property and making summer homes or hotels/apartments to rent to vacationers.

The beach we found was just like the one on Naxos - clear, blue, quiet, sandy, and clean. We stayed for a while there just reading, and then rode into town to get some Turkish food. I wound up here at the memphis.ga internet cafe, whatever that means, and saw a chance to update. yay!

When i get home and am not paying by the minute, I have endless stories to tell, about shifty scooter rental places, trying to pantomime to a pharmacist that we needed condoms with lubricant, and trying to get a shot of the apollo temple on naxos as the sun went down WITHOUT a chubby german child climbing on it.

Tomorrow, we think we might visit a butterfly sanctuary, go to the beach, and tour a cemetary dating back to third century b.c. Then again, we may just stay in bed all day.

xoxoxo
